Das wirtschaftlich realisierbare Einsparpotenzial für den Gesamtverbrauch (Strom, Heizung, Transport) durch Effizienzsteigerungen in Haushalten, Produktionsstätten und Bürogebäuden ist häufig erstaunlich hoch, 20 bis 30 Prozent sind durchaus üblich – In vielen Fällen – insbesondere Privathaushalte – sind auch Einsparungen weit darüber hinaus wirtschaftlich machbar, etwa 50 Prozent beim Gesamtverbrauch und noch wesentlich höhere Werte (selbst weit über 90 Prozent je nach vorherigem Zustand) in einigen Teilbereichen, etwa bei der Heizung. Nationale und internationalen Klimaschutzziele (Kyoto-Protokoll) gehen demgegenüber von deutlich niedrigeren Potenzialen aus und die praktische Umsetzung fällt oft weit hinter diese bescheideneren Richtlinien zurück, teilweise kann es schon als Erfolg gewertet werden, wenn der Verbrauch wenigstens nicht steigt.
Das Thema Energieverbrauch und Energieeinsparung ist als Punkt auf der gesellschaftlichen Agenda weitgehend anerkannt. Was jedoch häufig fehlt, insbesondere im gewerblichen Kontext, ist die Information darüber, welche genauen Verbräuche und Kosten eine bestimmte Handlung mit sich bringt. Zudem sind über viele Alternativen nur Nachteile bekannt, die diese in ihrer Anfangszeit hatten, inzwischen aber oftmals gelöst sind. Es fällt daher schwer, energieeffizient zu handeln. Im Zusammenhang mit diesem Informationsdefizit hat sich in den letzten Jahren der Begriff Energietransparenz eingebürgert.
Energieeinsparung bezeichnet alle Maßnahmen zur Verringerung der „verbrauchten“ Energie der Energieträger. Energieeffizienz bezeichnet hingegen die Effizienz des Einsatzes von Energie, also das Verhältnis von Nutzen zum Energieaufwand.
